What makes a good document?

July 5, 2017

Hi. What makes a good document?  Lots of people have different opinions.  But perhaps the simplest (and best, IMHO) explanation is that a good document is one that gives your intended audience the information it needs at the time it is needed.

Of course, this is an easy thing to write...but hard to do.  Why?  Because you need to think like the intended audience to know what they need. If you want to have a good document, you need to put yourself in the audience's position and ask 5 questions:

  1. What information do I need?

  2. How do I want to use the information?

  3. Is the source of the information valid?

  4. Can I read or view the information?

  5. Why should I care about the information?

Net time, we'll talk about just what IS a document.  Stay tuned!
